Special 1st Day Back! North Windham leg, and meeting heroes!
What an amazing day to hit the trails again!! It was a very slow mile as my 1st walk since re-tearing a bit of my quad tendon, but picking up from where we left off put us in the exact right spot to meet two of our Greenway Superheroes, Shan Riggs and Joshuaine Grant, who are thru-running (Shan) and biking (Josh) the full East Coast Greenway, raising money to help the continued growth of safe, dedicated trails to give bikers, walkers, and runners a safe way to get out and enjoy all the Greenway has to offer without having to fight traffic. When they arrive at the Canadian border in Calais, Maine, in a couple weeks, Shan will become the first runner to complete the entire East Coast Greenway. They left from Key West, Florida, on April 16th, and The Girl Child and I have been following their adventure online. (Look for Shan Riggs on Facebook, or check out the East Coast Greenway Alliance's page for posts about him.) It was so exciting to get to see and cheer for them, and they were gracious enough to stop to chat with us for a minute. Great people, and a great cause -- we are thanking them by donating to the Greenway (again!) in honor of their Connecticut leg, and you can do the same here:

The Map Man and The Eldest Offspring joined us for this fun little leg, which began in a parking lot in a small commercial plaza in North Windham, and we traveled easterly for about a mile until my knee said we were done.
Our timing was absolute perfection to be passed by Shan and Josh while actually walking a leg -- The Girl Child and I have been dreaming of meeting them like this, on the trail we are all traversing (albeit at vastly different paces!), since they set out from Key West. Dream come true!!
We continued on this absolutely lovely stretch of trail after our visit, coming to this magical beaver pond, home to a rookery of Great Blue Herons. I've always wanted to visit this rookery, so yet another dream come true!
My leg was pretty sure a mile of walking was enough for our first day back (I only just started Physical Therapy 3 days ago, so I really do need to take it easy for a bit -- hard on a day as perfect for walking as this one was!). Above, The Map Man and The Eldest Offspring headed back the way we came to fetch our vehicle, while The Girl Child and I took a side trail (below) out to a road for pick up.
