Potter Rd to Estabrook Rd, Hampton, CT Leg

Image
Chilly but gorgeous day to hit the East Coast Greenway out in Hampton, CT, and check another 1.5 miles off our big walk from Canada to Florida!  We walked this leg as an out-and-back, so walked a total of 3 miles, which was a big test for my knee.  Happily, it was completely doable!   I felt perfectly fine for 2.25 miles, then after about .25 miles of mild discomfort, everything seemed to settle in again until the final tenth of a mile (and even then I think the trouble had more to do with the cold affecting my muscles than with my knee).  I'm marking this one down as a big win! At our turn-around point on Estabrook Rd -- we will pick up here next time.   Only about 6.5 miles to go to complete all of the East Coast Greenway in Eastern Connecticut!  61 miles walked, 113 miles traversed, 2887 miles to go!

Parker Rd to Potter Rd, Hampton, CT Leg

It's really starting to feel like fall out there!  The Girl Child and I delighted in the chilly, gray morning and got ourselves out on the East Coast Greenway in Hampton, CT, today to check off another mile of trail. (We walked it out and back, so actually did 2 miles, but only the first one counts towards our journey. This is still the level I'm comfortable with, for now that's all we're going to do.  I certainly hope I'm able to start stretching that soon! Otherwise it's going to take me until I'm 120 to complete this journey!)     Despite the entire portion of the trail that we are walking in this part of Connecticut being a part of the Northern Airline Trail, which is overall a very well developed Rail Trail, the  first part of this segment of the trail was a narrow, rocky single path. Once we got past Route 6 overpass, it widened back out to the two track we have become used to on this portion of the trail, which is much easier for me to walk. The loose...

Chewink Rd, Chaplin to Parker Rd, Hampton Leg

Oops!  I never hit post on this although I wrote it last weekend! On the 24th of September friends joined us for a 2 mile leg of the East Coast Greenway on a lovely autumn day!  We started at Chewink Rd in Chaplin and head north, ending at Parker Rd in Hampton.  I was trying out a new knee brace today. Disappointingly, it did not do the job, so it was a very careful leg for me. (Since then I have purchased a different brace which is much much better and is allowing me to walk nearly 2 miles without discomfort.)   One of our side-quests for this walk was to locate downed White Birch trees so we could collect bark for crafting. The Map Man peeled a nice quantity of usable bark from several downed trees for us. That should keep us busy for a bit! 58.5 miles walked, 110.5 miles traversed, and 2889.5 miles to go!
