NORTH CAROLINA: Town Commons Park, Smithfield to Dunn-Erwin Rail Trail, Dunn Leg

Our lone North Carolina leg for the trip did not start out the way we expected.  We had planned our stop to strategically fall 1/3 of the way through a 10hr driving stint, and since we were under a strict deadline, I had timed out just the right length trail segment to be able to complete our up-and-back walk.  But imagine our surprise when, half way to our starting point, we ran into a trail closure.

So our walk ended up being 1 mile instead of 2, and we spent the bulk of our alloted time driving the 20-mile on-road segment down to the next dedicated trail segment in Dunn.  We'll have to try to catch the missing trail half-segment during a future trip to the area.

The Girl Child chose to place our "No Bad Vibes" rock for this walk at the trail closure sign, to brighten the day of another unsuspecting traveler who becomes dismayed at discovering this bit of unwelcome news.

Besides the walk being short, it was a lovely day and location to be out on the trails, and we would have loved to spend more of it walking and less of it driving!  So amazing to be able to walk somewhere with an abundance of birds and frogs calling in early January!!

After 20 miles of driving the winding path of the on-road Greenway, we left off at the start of the next off-road bit in Dunn, which is where we will pick up when we next return to this area.  There are a lot more pretty trail segments to travel in this beautiful state!

77.5 miles walked, 157.5 miles traversed, 2842.5 miles to go!
